2024 World Lung Cancer Day

On World Lung Cancer Day, I am reminded of the faces of the people I have cared for with lung cancer. I am reminded of the pain and suffering I have seen this disease cause to the patients, the patient’s family and the caregivers who treat them. I am reminded of the countless hours scientists put in labs desperately researching lung cancer to learn how to better prevent, treat or identify the disease.

But for as much pain and suffering this disease has caused, for as much time and effort that has been spent working on a cure, I also see hope.

I see people living longer with better qualities of life due to precision oncology and immunotherapy. I see earlier detection through the use of low dose CT scans to find the disease when its curable. I see better ways of diagnosing lung cancer via robotic navigational bronchoscopy. In all, I see a better tomorrow in the fight against lung cancer.
