Lung Cancer Risk Factors

Lung Cancer Risk Factors

Every honest individual knows smoke from tobacco cigarettes is a risk factor for lung cancer. Smoke is associated with 90% of lung cancer cases with 3% due to second hand smoke exposure. Quitting smoking decreases a person’s lung cancer risk ten fold.

But what are other factors that increase aa person’s risk of contracting lung cancer?

Exhaust: Combustion of fuels, especially fossil fuels, produces toxins that if inhaled will also increase a person’s risk. This can be especially problematic in spaces without proper ventilation.

Radon gas: Radon is an odorless, colorless, radioactive gas derived from decaying uranium found in most soils. Radon accumulates in our homes where concentrations can rise to unsafe levels. Contrary to common belief, one does NOT need a basement to be at risk.

Asbestos: Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was used in construction due to its impressive ability to insulate. Unfortunately, inhalation of small fibers leads to both lung cancer and mesothelioma usually at least thirty years after exposure. Regular masks do not protect you from asbestos. Asbestos is still present in some buildings however as long is its under a coat of paint and not being disturbed, it is not dangerous.

Genetics: There is a 2 to 5% risk of lung cancer in people with a first degree relative with a lung cancer diagnosis. This is not due to smoking.

Inflammatory Disease:  Chronic inflammation is a risk factor for all but four cancers. The presence of such chronic inflammatory lung diseases such as COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and tuberculosis increases a person’s risk of lung cancer.

So, what does this mean? Decreasing smoking is an obvious improvement. Checking your house for radon is important. Avoiding asbestos is a no brainer but you have to know if its present. You can’t do anything about your genetics but stopping smoking will decrease your risk of COPD.

Knowledge is power. And that power can help you.
